The Flood:
On April 16 and 17, Mother Nature decided to show us
just who was boss by dumping 4.25 inches of rain; 3.50 inches in just 15 hours.
The gates in Sebec had been fully opened on the 14th and it did help
but unfortunately there was still ice in the lake and a great deal of damage has
been done. Strong erratic winds appeared Monday after the 18th,
causing the remaining ice to shift from shore to shore. One illustration of the
power involved: The Bartram boat house, on the Bowerbank shore for over 20 years
was crushed and virtually destroyed
in just seconds. Only the back wall and roof remain. A great many camps were
filled with water and boat, wharves and such are scattered all over. Check your
camp as soon as possible and pay particular attention to electrical, gas and
sewer hookups and fixtures to make sure they work properly. Also proceed down
camp roads with caution. There are numerous washouts. April 25th we
experience more heavy rain and the lake flooded again. The predicted average of
rain fall for April was 3 inches, but we got 10 1/2 inches.
